NOTE: On July 25, 2008, the Highway Commission selected Alternative Two as the Preferred Alternative. That information is shown below.
Construction: Two lane highway viaduct over the Union Pacific railroad tracks along the west edge of Hershey. A new intersection of L-56C with US-30 would be constructed directly north of the proposed viaduct. First Street would be closed west of Logan Avenue. Second Street would be extended west to intersect the new bypass. A separate "pedestrian only" bridge would be constructed near the existing downtown (Lincoln Ave. / L-56C) at grade crossing.
Right-of-Way: Additional ROW, (approximately 19 acres) will be needed. No homes will need to be purchased. The two existing at grade in town RR crossings will be closed, (Lincoln Ave. / L-56C and Patterson Avenue), once the highway viaduct is open to traffic.
Phasing: Existing highway link will remain open until the viaduct is complete and open to traffic. Portions of the existing highway link in town will be permanently relinquished to the village upon completion of the new viaduct and roadway.
Cost: $ 6.6 Million (today's dollars)
